Many of us have them boxed away, waiting for the day they’re put back in the aging player, for us to relive those moments years into the past.
In some cases these recordings might be the last we have of loved ones who are no longer with us, or children who long ago grew up.
Going back in time like this can be an emotional experience, but without taking care of the media these recordings are stored on, we risk ruining that experience, or losing our access to them completely.
There are steps you can take to keep your magnetic media the best possible condition such as storing them in a climate-controlled dry, cool and non-humid atmosphere.
But even then, Magnetic media such VHS tapes experience constant deterioration. The magnetic particles which form the signal for the video typically lose 10% to 20% of the signal after only 10 to 25 years.
Whilst you still may be able to make out the picture, and can make out the words some distortion in the voices of loved ones, this can seriously reduce the enjoyment of old memories captured on VHS tapes.
And there are other ways that physical media can be damaged or even destroyed. Magnetic media can beaccidentally de- magnetised for example, By being stored next to a strong Magnetic source such as a loudspeaker. Old media is far too often accidentally thrown out in a clear out.
And if you are using a old player to play that media back, there's always a risk that the tape might get jammed, stretched or otherwise damaged with each play, causing playback problems. Experiencing this anxiety: “is the tape being damaged as I play it?” - whilst reliving old memories - surely detracts from the experience.
So even with proper precautions, carefully keeping magnetic media in optimal conditions is not enough to safeguard your recordings. In this modern, digital age, however we have an affordable, easy-to-access (think, in the palm of your hand), sharable and overall superior way to store and view our recordings. That solution is simply this: conversion to digital.
In contrast to magnetic,digital media can be replicated and shared at almost zero cost and to as many devices as you like and even stored in cloud! It doesn't risk deteriorating each time you view it.
And you're not dependent on an old player from the 80s or 90s to view your treasured memories, or obliged to try and find a more recent replacement player! You can play recordings on almost any of the modern audio-visual devices you use every day, at home or on-the-go, even your smartphone!
As the Chinese proverb says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now”. Treasured memories should be treated in the same way - act now to digitize your recordings, before they deteriorate further.
Don't leave it too late for the memory to fade away with the magnetic media they depend on.
